Memory for Cline, Windsurf and ChatGPT: connecting MaxGraph in 10 minutes

Ready-made MCP configs for Cline, Windsurf (Devin Desktop) and ChatGPT: local MaxGraph server, access token, verification, common pitfalls.

Agent memory How-to

TL;DR: MaxGraph speaks MCP — the standard protocol — so it plugs into any compatible host. Below are ready-made configs for Cline, Windsurf (now Devin Desktop) and ChatGPT. We already have dedicated guides for Cursor and Claude Code.

What you need

  • A running local MaxGraph (5-minute install — one prompt to your agent)
  • Your access token: after the first launch it sits in data/local_token.txt
  • 10 minutes

The endpoint is the same everywhere: http://localhost:8787/mcp, header Authorization: Bearer <your token>.

Cline (VS Code)

Cline panel → MCP Servers icon → Configure → Configure MCP Servers, then into the JSON:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "maxgraph": {
      "type": "streamableHttp",
      "url": "http://localhost:8787/mcp",
      "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer <your token>" }
    }
  }
}

Important: "type": "streamableHttp" is required — without it Cline silently falls back to legacy SSE, which MaxGraph doesn’t speak. You can also edit the file directly: ~/.cline/data/settings/cline_mcp_settings.json.

Windsurf / Devin Desktop

The file ~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "maxgraph": {
      "serverUrl": "http://localhost:8787/mcp",
      "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer <your token>" }
    }
  }
}

Note: Windsurf calls the key serverUrl, not url.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT reaches MCP servers from the cloud — it can’t see your localhost. So first give your instance a public HTTPS URL (easiest: Tailscale Funnel; the machine stays at home), then pick one of two paths:

  1. Your own GPT with actions (the proven path, step-by-step with screenshots in docs/GPTS.md): the openapi.yaml schema + API Key Bearer.
  2. Custom MCP server: chatgpt.com → Plugins → “Add custom MCP server” → your HTTPS URL ending in /mcp → Bearer auth.

Verify

After saving the config, fully restart the host (quit, not just close the window) and start a new session. Tell the agent: “remember: my favorite stack is Python”. A memory-tool call appears — it works; on the dashboard at http://localhost:8787/app the first star lights up.

No tools showing up? Almost always it’s start order: hosts pick up MCP config only at session start. Full restart + new session — then check again.
